How will DNA samples be collected?
The standard method of collection is by cheek swabs. Blood collection is also an option and offers the same accuracy as cheek swabs, but it is more invasive and painful.
Alternative Samples:
The following forensic samples can be used to determine biological relationships:
- Hair follicles
- Toothbrush
- Blood stains on a handkerchief
- Earwax
Please note these alternative samples are used for non-legal DNA testing purposes only. Certain forensic samples, such as hair follicles, require a court order for use in legal testing.
Contact our office at 973-718-4515 for more information about using forensic samples for legal purposes.
How long does it take to receive my results?

What is the difference between maternity and paternity tests?
Difference Between Maternity Test and Paternity Test
- Purpose:
- A paternity test determines if a man is the biological father of a child.
- A maternity test determines if a woman is the biological mother of a child.
- Involved Parties:
- Paternity testing involves the alleged father, the mother, and the child.
- Maternity testing involves the alleged mother and the child.
- Use Cases:
- Paternity tests are commonly used when there is doubt about fatherhood.
- Maternity tests are often used in adoption or immigration cases or when the biological mother is in question.
- Testing Process:
Both tests use DNA analysis by collecting tissue samples, usually through cheek swabs. The samples are sent to a lab for analysis of genetic markers to confirm biological relationships. - Report:
The only difference in the report is whether it indicates maternity or paternity testing. - Additional Notes:
- A complete paternity test requires samples from the alleged father, mother, and child.
- DNA testing cannot distinguish between identical twins as biological fathers.
- Blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants can affect test accuracy and must be disclosed.
